Skipping Girl Take Away | Abbotsford

One lazy Sunday afternoon we reached out to our good friend Alex to see if he wanted to get a bite to eat. And the words “Skipping Girl Take Away” made up part of his reply! And when you get a reply like that, well, you just go – so off to Abbotsford we went!

When we first arrived, these questions were in my mind: “Is it a fish & chip shop?”, “Is it a milk bar?” ,”Why didn’t I bring my umbrella?” Unless it’s raining when you go, the chances are you’ll ask the same first two questions I did. And the answer? It’s a more current burger bar operating in the skeletal remains of a fish n’ chip shop.

As we (not-so) gracefully squeezed our rear-ends past the couple of inhabited tables, we all notice the hundred-billion-million (oh no, no exaggeration there) bottles of hot sauces to blow your socks off with. So, what is this place really? A dash of panache to the good o’l neighborhood takeaway.

It wasn’t enough that the boys both had to get Double Beef Patty Burgers ($16/ea), layered with oozy cheese and sauce, they needed to indulge themselves further by dunking their share of our Large ‘Triple Cooked’ Chips ($12) chips into a side of thick gravy ($1.50).

Aside from being waaaaay too big for either of my carnivorous companions to eat like rational human beings, they both seemed to enjoy their burgers. Well cooked beef patties, grilled bun, classic flavours. Nothing overly complicated or in depth to report on here, but sometimes that’s what makes things really good: simplicity.

As for me? I’m sorry to report, my fellow veg-heads, that while all the other components of my Veggie Burger ($12) were great, that ‘potato-pea-carrot’ patty was lack-luster for me.  I’m not saying it was a bad patty, no, I’m not. I’m saying it was the ‘turn to mush’-fall-out-of-the-bun-like-fallen-soldiers-patty-that-tastes-like-nothing-when-you-pick-them-back-up-to-eat-them-because-you-can’t-really-smush-them-back-into-your-burger-at-this-point. To summarise, it was as expected from a place whose patronage doesn’t consist of a lot of vegetarians. Sometimes a veg burger is just good when it’s exactly like the meat ones, but just without the meat. Oh the challenges of our current day of trying to please all! 😉

But please, don’t mistake me! By no means do I want you to take my critique of the veg burger as a reason not to check this place out.  By the way my cohorts consumed their meaty-burgers, and the steady stream of patrons coming and going while we dined in — I’d say I’m the odd one out!  So if you like the idea of trying to fit food that’s too big for your face into your mouth, go! By all means go and don’t forget to try one of the billion-million hot sauces while you’re there! LOL!

These guys only accept cash, so if you forgot to stuff your wallet before you head in, don’t worry! They have an ATM at the back of the premises, but that’s only good if you can get to it if the place isn’t packed full of people! 😉
