We’re repeat customers at Flavours in Bundoora because of a singular reason, which also happens to be their namesake: flavours. The simplicity of their dining room atmosphere (granted, made more interesting by some eclectic decor) is completely and utterly overshadowed by two things: their sweet-smiling server (I don’t know her name, but she’s adorable) and their incredibly tasty food.
One of their specialties is a gigantic piece of goodness called a Dosa. A dosa is a savoury crepe-like parcel filled with your selection of tasty filling. When we come here, we usually get the Masala Dosa, which is filled with smashed-potato spiced just right and accompanied with a soothing coconut chutney and hot sambal (like a really spicy soup). This is a real favourite with the locals – how do we know? Well, when you see a near meter-long, foil-wrapped dosa walk out of the premises every 5-10 minutes, throughout the duration of your meal – every time you come – then it’s safe to say it’s popular.
Among our favourite dishes here is the Shahi Paneer, an uber-rich and thick curry of cashew and cream, made even better by fat chunks of paneer (like tightly formed cottage cheese blocks) floating around in it. However, be warned – this sucker is rich. So you’ll need an opposite style curry as a palette cleanser…
So let us introduce you to the Aloo Baignan: smoked eggplant and potato simmered in a tomato-based curry. It’s more spicy than rich, but not too spicy, and more importantly – packed full of those amazing and intense flavours India is so well known for. This is a great partner to the more smooth Shahi Paneer as its taste is on opposing end of the flavour scale.
The Rice is pretty standard, what you’d expect. And their Garlic Naan is hot, semi-elastic but semi-firm and smothered in buttery garlic-y goodness and topped with fresh coriander. The perfect dunk-in-dip companion to any curry. Overall, Flavours isn’t going to ‘wow’ you with their location, ambiance, or decor – but if your focus is on taste – then your lips will form those words: wow! Highly recommended if you’re anywhere near the area!

Tip! They offer some great banquets here – at good prices – so if you’re not sure what to get, go for one of those and be prepared to have way more food than you’ll be able to eat in a single sitting!
