We snagged a killer deal for The Shaw Davey Slum on Scoopon: $35 for 2 people that included 2 drinks each, an entree sampler, main and desert. We figured we couldn’t go wrong with this deal so we bought two and headed there with some friends! Keep in mind that while the dining side of this pub is relatively hip and cool, it shares the same space with the bar and pool table – so be prepared to hear some miscellaneous shouting and roars from time to time.
The entree was a plate including: buffalo wing, Vegemite calamari, polenta chip, and an arancini ball. Hubby swapped his two veg with my two meat, so that evened out nicely for us. Nothing spectacular here, but definitely edible after you’ve started on your first drink!
Hubby and one of our friends got the Chicken Parma which was standard in every shape and form – from appearances, serving size, and flavour. Good.
Our other friend got the Fish & Chips, again – what you’d expect. Just enough flavour so you’re happy to eat, but nothing that makes you think, “I”ll get that again.”
I had the Zucchini & Macadamia Burger which was visually very impressive. The patty didn’t have much flavour, but the cheese and other condiments helped make up for it a bit. Again, good. But I must give these guys some props for at least having a veg option like this on the menu (and not just a bowl of pasta).
Hubby had the Salted Caramel & Popcorn Panna Cotta which he enjoyed better than any of the other dishes. He’s not a ‘sweets’ sort of person, so that’s saying a lot when you think about it.
I ordered the Peanut Butter Cheesecake that had a really intense peanut flavour, as to be expected, but was way to sweet for my palette. I’m sure if you’re someone who really likes sweets, you’d love this!Overall, it’s a pub. It’s a pub dressed up a bit nicer and serving slightly fancier looking pub food. Good. We won’t hurry back there, as the patrons weren’t really our ‘crowd’, but it might be right up your alley! Especially given their beer was incredibly well priced at $5 a pot.
