Despite living in Eltham and the surrounding areas for over a decade, these Two Bears never ever ever (ever!) went to La Zanyas. Ever. Why? Well, it just never looked all that spesh with its “haven’t been updated since 1982” pokies-carpet & pensioner table interior – that and the fact it’s two doors down from Machan, which nobody’s a match for when we’re hungry in Eltham! 😛 But what years of exposure to the location couldn’t do, Groupon did. Their deal lured us in for 2-courses with wine, for 2 people, at a ridiculously cheap $29.
We both had a House Red Wine, which was surprisingly decent – so much so, Hubby Bear ordered a second glass. We also shared the first course of classic Bruschetta, exactly what we though it’d be like in terms of portion size, tomato, onion, and so on – except the semi-grilled cheese on top – that was a new one. But they were good and filled the void!
Hubby’s main was a Tortellini Calabrese with hot salami, mushroom, marinated capsicum, olives and a Napoli sauce with thin slivers of parmesan on top. A pretty standard yet tasty dish. Nothing Earth-shattering, but he was impressed with it enough to polish off the plate!
I decided to order, in addition to my main, a Mediterranean Salad ($14.50) thinking it would be like a side salad. But this sucker was a meal in and of itself! Mixed greens, cucumber, olives, marinated peppers, tomato, red onion, feta – with plenty of their “home made” Italian dressing topping it all off. Dish #3 was yet again, good!
My main was the Fetta & Spinach Pizza – its name not deceiving in the slightest – as there was plenty of both on it! Although I did think the mozarella cheese topper was a bit too crispy, but that’s my personal taste. But perhaps the method was to keep all that spinach, onion, olives, and diced tomato from falling off when I bit in? Who knows! I won’t get too hung up in the details, we were dining on a Groupon – in short, dish #4 was a good pizza.
Despite continuously expecting someone to sing out “Bingo!”, the overall dining experience here was a solid “good”. The staff were super friendly and very accommodating – which you never know you’re going to get when you present a Groupon voucher. Their service was the type that essentially said, “We value you, we want you back” – so two big thumbs up for that! In short, La Zanyas isn’t trying to innovate your dining experience – they’re after giving their regulars a consistent, good meal. So if you’re in the area and think that’ll hit the spot, then we suggest you go!
Value: ★★★★★✔ – based on our Groupon deal, not the actual menu prices.
