Kustom Burger | Thornbury

The burger competition in Melbourne is getting fierce. There seems to be more and more trendy little burger joints popping up everywhere I look. Even McDonald’s knows it needs to pick up its game by offering their “Create Your Taste” menu and advertising themselves as “so very un-McDonalds”. So, when global franchises are struggling to get into our wallets, how does a small establishment get us Melbourne foodies to become loyal patrons? Make good food, make it fresh, make it in a place we’re comfortable sitting in (and being seen in), and make it consistent.  In saying all that, it’s time we get talking about Kustom Burgers in Thornbury and what we think of their contribution to this crowded burger market.

But before I talk about the food, I just have to explain something to you quickly so our experience has some context. I’m one of the few vegetarians on this planet that doesn’t like mushrooms. No, I don’t. I never have and I don’t know if I ever will like them enough to want an entire portobello mushroom sandwiched in a burger bun.  Enter the dilemma with Kustom Burgers. Their veg option is the exact type of veg burger I avoid. A huge mushroom in bread.

So the two bears put their heads together and, a-ha! Wifey bear gets a normal F150 burger, but asks for the meat patty to be put on the side so hubby bear can devour it as a ‘side’ dish or add it to his own burger! Plan of attack made, Hubby bear goes to order and confuses their poor, sweet servers, who finally ascertain our goal: Make 1 x F150 burger with a meat patty, and one without.

So, it comes as no surprise that my burger was preeeettttty blah. Clearly, all the goodness is in the meat and nothing more. You might be thinking, “Duh! What did you expect woman?!” But my retort to that is…I had some hope it would fly!!! Why? In-And-Out Burger in America offer a veg option called a ‘grilled cheese’, which is the exact same thing as their cheese burger but without the meat patty – and it’s unbelievable. Honestly unbelievably good. But not so here.

Hubby bear liked his now-double-patty burger, but didn’t think it had any particular strength or noteworthy taste. He said that, hands-down, Chew Burgers up the street produces significantly better burgers than what he was eating at Kustom.

But to be fair, I didn’t get a ‘normal’ menu item, and neither did hubby.  So it’s likely our experience is totally tainted, but without a decent vegetarian option for me, we’re not likely to go back to see if it differs. In saying all this though, if you like American burgers then I’d recommend you give them a go, order a standard item off the menu, and make the decision for yourself 🙂
